At Bupa Dental Chirnside Park, we understand that good oral habits start early.

When you visit us for the first time, our team will welcome you and ensure you feel comfortable. We’ll be able to answer any questions you have and obtain a record of your medical history to help us tailor the course of treatment for your oral health needs.

Our team of dental professionals are experienced in providing preventive, restorative treatments and cosmetic dental treatments at our Chirnside Park clinic. This includes root canals, crowns and bridges. We can also provide oral surgery and correct orthodontic issues for all ages, including early treatment for children aged 6-10 years.

We love working together to improve the oral health of our local community, and we want you to feel at ease in our clinic. If you’re nervous about visiting the dentist, we offer sedation options such as happy gas.

Dr Mario Garita

Dr Mario Garita

As the principal dentist of Bupa Dental Chirnside Park, Dr Mario Garita has been practising dentistry for over three decades. He earned his dental degree from the University of Melbourne, later going on to complete a master’s degree in 1991 and an orthodontics fellowship in 2003.

Dr Garita has a keen interest in preventive dentistry, believing that prevention is the best way for patients to maintain their oral health. He credits assistance from his team of capable hygienists and oral health therapists in helping him prevent dental issues and keep patients healthy. Dr Garita also has a passion for orthodontics and enjoys helping people achieve the smile they want.

Aside from dentistry, Dr Garita enjoys golfing, travelling and spending time with his family.

Dr Denis Drew

Dr Denis Drew

After earning his degree from Melbourne University, Dr Denis Drew began a career in general dentistry that has spanned over 40 years. In that time, Dr Drew has built a wealth of experience in many different areas of dentistry.

Dr Drew is an experienced general dentist and is perhaps best known for his friendly, caring approach to patients. He’s committed to keeping his professional skills and knowledge fresh, which is why he continues to seek ongoing training and education. He is a member of the Australian Dental Association.

In his free time, Dr Drew’s main interests are sport, gardening and travel.

Dr Stephen Friedmann

Dr Stephen Friedmann

Dr Stephen Friedmann is an experienced dentist who excels at helping patients feel comfortable and relaxed. He completed his studies at Melbourne University and has extensive experience in many different areas of dentistry.

Dr Friedmann is especially interested in how dentistry can assist with issues like poor sleep and TMJD. He also has exhaustive expertise in root canal therapy and restoring smiles using crowns and bridges. However, his primary interest is making sure that all patients are healthy, comfortable and feel empowered to maintain their own oral health even when they’re not in the dental chair.

Dr Friedmann is a member of the Australia Dental Association and you can usually find him reading or golfing in his free time.

Dr Amber Halstead

Dr Amber Halstead

In 2007, Dr Amber Halstead earned her bachelor of dental science (with honours!) from the University of Western Australia. Since then, Dr Halstead has spent years building her experience and developing a strong reputation as a caring, friendly dentist.

She began her career at Monash Medical Centre as a dental resident before moving into private and public dentistry. She now works as a general dentist and has special interests in areas like preventive dentistry and treating anxious patients.

As a mum of two children, Dr Halstead enjoys spending most of her free time with her family.

Dr Shymal Kumar

Dr Shymal Kumar

After receiving a bachelor of dental science from Melbourne University, Dr Shymal Kumar began building experience and has quickly developed a reputation as a compassionate, welcoming dentist with a sharp eye for detail.

Dr Kumar has a special interest in prosthodontists and endodontics (root canal treatments). He enjoys helping patients address complex dental issues and improving their quality of life. He is a member of the Australian Dental Association.

When he’s not helping patients, Dr Kumar enjoys movies and spending time with his family and friends.

Dr Milu Varghese

Dr Milu Varghese

From an early age, Dr Milu Darly Varghese wanted to help people stay healthy – it’s no surprise she became a committed, passionate dentist! Known for her friendly, warm demeanour, Dr Varghese enjoys meeting new people and promoting good oral health.

Dr Varghese completed her studies at the Harvard-associated Sri Ramachandra University in India, going on to build extensive experience in a variety of dental fields. Although she enjoys helping people however she can, Dr Varghese has a keen interest in orthodontics, dental surgery and implants.

In her free time, Dr Varghese enjoys reading and playing badminton.

Oral Health Therapists

Ronda Hewes

Ronda Hewes

An experienced oral health therapist, Ronda Hewes earned her diploma of applied science in dental therapy in 1979. She has over 25 years of experience in public dentistry, working in Melbourne suburbs and the Yarra Valley. She has been with the Bupa Dental Chirnside Park team for over 12 years.

As a dental therapist, Ronda focuses on treating children and young adults. One of her biggest goals is helping young patients feel comfortable in the dental clinic and making sure they have positive experiences – she believes that the happier children are to return to the dentist, the better their oral health will be. She is a member of the Australian Dental and Oral Health Therapists’ Association.

Her patients’ oral health isn’t Ronda’s only interest. She also enjoys reading and spending time with her family, friends and two dogs.

Vanessa Jae Campbell

Vanessa Jae Campbell

Now a seasoned oral health therapist, Vanessa Jae Campbell began her career as a dental assistant – she credits this as the start of her passion for dentistry. After earning diplomas in oral health therapy, Vanessa began working in the public sector. She joined the Bupa Dental Chirnside Park team in 2008, also going on to earn a post-graduate certificate in dental therapy in 2014.

Vanessa’s role sees her primarily working with children and teenagers - her gentle and friendly approach is essential to creating positive experiences for young patients. She prides herself on making kids feel comfortable at the dentist, and she has a special skill for helping them manage dental anxiety. She tends to focus on areas like the treatment and prevention of gum disease, restorative dentistry and orthodontics.

Vanessa is a member of the Australian Dental and Oral Health Therapist Association.

In her spare time, she likes baking, spending time with family, sharing food with loved ones, exercising and being outside.

Hygienists

Katie Lee Harper

Katie Lee Harper

After a total of 22 years in the dental industry, Katie Lee Harper has seen a lot of teeth! A warm, compassionate hygienist and orofacial myologist, Katie began her career as a dental assistant. She has studied at a variety of institutions and has been with our team for over 16 years.

As a hygienist, Katie focuses on preventive, educational and therapeutic methods for controlling oral health problems. From a regular scale and clean to treating advanced stages of gum disease, from to teeth whitening and orthodontics, Katie’s priority is always a patient’s overall health and well-being. According to Katie, her biggest passion is helping patients work toward lives that are free from dental disease.

Katie is also qualified and experienced in orofacial myology, which involves any oral facial habits in children that may negatively affect facial growth. She is a member of the Dental Hygiene Association Australia and the Australian Orofacial Association.

Katie has two sons who keep her busy when she’s not at the clinic. When her sons aren’t playing footy or basketball, they can all be found camping in the summer. Katie is also a fan of netball and staying fit and active.
