August is Dental Health Month, so here's a reminder that oral health can play an important role in your overall well-being. That's why proper oral hygiene and regular check-ups with your dental practitioner are so important.
But when did you last make some time for yourself?
If you’re overdue for a check-up, or even if you just want to change something about your smile’s appearance, you might be surprised by what modern dentistry has made possible. Many dental treatments are likely to be more comfortable and convenient than those of the past. And many of these treatments are discreet, including natural-looking restorations and cosmetic options.
Your oral health is an important part of your overall health and well-being, so don’t forget to make time for it! Plus, there are a lot of different treatments that can enhance the appearance of your smile. Here, we’ll break down different options that can impact both your oral health and the way your teeth look.
Filling cavities
If your teeth have been damaged by decay, see a dental professional as soon as possible to prevent the damage from getting worse.
White fillings can help restore a damaged tooth to its original shape and appearance and are made from materials coloured to closely match your natural teeth. If you have previous amalgam fillings, talk to your dentist about whether these can be replaced with white fillings for a more natural look.
If you have small pits or fissures in your teeth, these can trap bacteria and food and increase your risk of tooth decay. Your dentist may be able to fill these small gaps using fissure seals made from the same material as white fillings.
Repairing and replacing teeth
If any of your teeth are damaged or missing, your dentist may recommend a crown or bridge to help restore the function and appearance of your mouth and protect your oral health.
Dental crowns are usually made of strong porcelain or ceramic that's closely colour-matched to your natural teeth. They're custom-made to fit over the damaged part of your tooth.
Dental bridges aim to plug the gap where teeth are absent. These artificial teeth are supported by crowns on either side when intensive surgery isn’t required to repair the structure of your teeth.
Changing the colour and shape of your teeth
If you're looking for an alternative to teeth whitening gels, veneers may be a good option. These thin laminates are bonded to the front of your teeth, helping change the look of your smile.
Veneers can help with darker stains and discoloured teeth that can't be treated with other whitening methods. They can also help modify the appearance of teeth that are slightly crooked, have small gaps or chips and cracks.
Veneers can be made from either porcelain or composite resin. They can last up to 10 years or even longer, especially if you follow a proper oral hygiene routine as advised by your dentist.
